Memoir Writing – Active Arts
Finding your voice, telling your story: Introduction to Memoir
This course will give you an opportunity to explore the range of possibilities in writing your life. Over four weeks, we will explore the different styles, formats and frames to help you find the perfect voice for your story. This is a generative workshop, so participants will have an opportunity to produce work in class, read excerpts from a range of memoirs, and share work and ideas with fellow writers. In addition to the writing they produce, all participants will leave with a basic plan for their Memoir. This is a class for everyone. No writing experience is necessary, and participants do not need to have an idea for a story.

Instructor Dr Bethany Waterhouse-Bradley is a writer and researcher based in Belfast. An alumna of Accidental’s Writer’s Circle, her work has been featured in Novels in the Pipeline, Litmosphere, the Apiary, and was highly commended in the Bryan McMahon short story prize. Her first novel, Emerentia, is a work of auto-fiction exploring motherhood through three generations of women in Ireland and the US. Her academic work employed detailed Narrative Life Story techniques to explore the experiences of people at the margins. She is completing a Masters in Creative Writing at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast.
