Handmade Music
Handmade Music
Monthly experimental music night in Belfast. Short sets, time to chat, space to move. First Thursday each month!
Handmade Music
Handmade Music is a brand-new experimental music night specially curated to feature an amazing mix of well-known artists, lesser-known artists, and surprise guests! All performing music from the edges of their craft.
You’ll hear ‘never-before-heard’ music, and music that may never be heard again.
Join the Handmade Music community in-person or online on the first Thursday of each month as we create this space for experimental/improvised music to exist…and seeing what comes out the other side.
Hope to see you there!
The Line-Ups!
March 2026
Joanna Mattrey: ‘Battle Ready II‘
Approx. 25-30min set
With themes of conflict, loss of home and cultural identity, Joanna Mattrey’s piece ‘Battle Ready II’ tasks the performers to play for those who have no voice. The work includes composition, improvisation, spoken text, and video. The quartet of saxophone, violin, viola, and electric guitar, featuring Joanna Mattrey, Nick Roth, Larissa O’Grady and Barry O’Halpin draw on the musicians’ fluency in improvisation and notated music, oscillating between coordinated written events and sweeping improvised textures and gestures, to create a powerful live experience.
QUB Ensemble
QUBe members will form the house band for the Handmade Music series. QUBe is a music collective based in Belfast involving students, staff, and musicians from inside and outside Queen’s University Belfast. QUBe brings together performers from diverse artistic backgrounds and musical interests.
Christine Tobin: ‘Pseudologia Fantastica‘
Approx. 25-30min set
Christine Tobin’s new work ‘Pseudologia Fantastica’ explores themes of disinformation – the misappropriation of new technologies and information networks to spread lies that destroy democratic conversation and undermine perceptions of the world. In the history of communication, we have never been so connected, yet we often find ourselves divided, mistrustful and weighed down by dark uncertainty about the future. Presented by Tobin with accompaniment by cellist Kate Shortt and guitarist Phil Robson, the piece includes spoken word and song, live electronic fx, pre-recorded soundscapes & compositions by Tobin, as well as sonic improv and hand percussion, marking a new direction for this artist.
Presented by Moving on Music and SARC in association with Accidental Theatre, with support from Improvising Futures SSHRC partnership.
