playtime
Kate Guelke is playing the piano for several hours each day, every day, for a month, at Accidental. Each day there will be a new lesson from pianist Keith McAlister so feel free to watch & learn along with Kate.
"The narrative of classical music practice – repeated industry mantras of ‘10000 hours’ and ‘practice, practice, practice’ – is a sadomasochistic insistence on constant rehearsal, adherence to the God-like authority of teachers and conductors, and self-abuse in favour of a work/life balance. It is a destructive culture that emphasises sanctity around private practice and perfectionist public performance, a culture that ‘hides the brushstrokes’ from audiences and maintains an aura of mystery around the rigorously applied talents of musicians.
Kate says she has no talent, so she has nothing to hide. Kate will practice piano on camera until she is better (or worse, whichever way it goes). Watch along.
