Sometimes God mixes up the people. We all love somebody – every man’s got somebody that he loves, heh? But sometimes…there’s too much and it goes where it mustn’t

A View from the Bridge

A View from the Bridge, set in New York City, is a story about an Italian American family, the Carbones. Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman living in Brooklyn, has a loving wife, Beatrice. The Carbones have raised their 17-year-old niece, Catherine, since childhood. Now, just as Catherine is becoming a woman, the Carbone family open their doors to two of Beatrice's cousins from Sicily and passions arise.

Director Deaglan Page said:

The emotional entanglements of an Italian-American family in the middle of the last century would not, you think, tell us anything about contemporary life. But the entanglements matter; they are exactly the same that every one of us has experienced in our own lives. The play deals with a working class family taking in illegal migrant workers. It is made plain that this secret must be maintained at all costs and the price of breaking that trust is to be ostracised – or worse. People in this part of the world are all too familiar with that code. An additional parallel is most families on this Island have seen a relative leave in the hope of finding work in another country.

This event is staged by Belfast based theatre company DAMD. This production was previously sold out in The Belfast Barge in 2014 and was The Belfast Telegraph’s “Pick of the Week”.
